Rosie and Chelsea fixed their broken bridges in June, when the latter finally reached out to her mother for the first time in years. “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” alum visited her troublesome daughter behind bars and reflected on the meeting in a new interview.
“[It] was the first conversation I’ve had with her in 10 years that lasted more than 25 minutes,” the entertainer said about the prison visit. She noted that the meeting also marked the first time she had seen Chelsea “in a consistent way,” and that her daughter cried when the visit was over.
Rosie also told Page Six that seeing Chelsea in tears was the first time she had seen “an empathetic emotion from her.” She described her daughter’s behavior as signs of progress, adding that she was growing up and hoped “her future is brighter than this past decade has been.”
The Media Personality Reflected On The Prison Visit With A Poem
As stated, Rosie and Chelsea met for the first time in years in June, with the TV personality sharing the good news with fans on Instagram. She announced the surprise reconciliation with a picture of herself and her oldest daughter hugging, accompanied by a lengthy poem detailing the prison visit.
Rosie noted the weather was hot on the day she visited Chelsea in prison and opted for shorts to beat the heat. She was directed to sit at table 8 and warned by the guard not to exchange money, to keep her hands on the table, and not to use a loud voice.
She recalled her heart skipping a beat when Chelsea arrived, noting her daughter looked “good,” “healthy,” and “calm,” with “rested blue eyes” and “clear skin.” Rosie noted they embraced and were soon distracted by a toddler visiting another inmate, prompting Rosie to reveal that Chelsea’s four children had yet to visit her.
The Visit Was Cut Short Due To A Tornado Warning
Rosie’s prison poem continued, stating that a visit meant to be four hours was cut short by a tornado warning. She recalled Chelsea slumping in her chair and looking “crestfallen” by the announcement, implying that she did not want to see her mother go.
They shared one last hug before parting ways, with Rosie noting she kept thinking about their meeting on her drive home. “Proud of us both. Unconditional love [is] simply the only way [through] motherhood,” she wrote, adding:
“Love and forgiveness are a must. Even when it seems impossible. Especially then. We live, we learn, we grow. Even at 64.”
The Entertainer’s Daughter Violated The Terms Of Her Probation
Rosie shared more details about her reconciliation with Chelsea on Substack, including the first half of the poem she shared on Instagram. She revealed she visited her oldest daughter in prison because the inmate had contacted her first.
Chelsea’s incarceration began in October 2025 when she was sentenced to jail for a probation violation. The Blast reported that the legal drama linked to her sentencing initially began in 2024 with three back-to-back arrests for drug-related crimes followed by a six-year probation sentence.
Rosie’s troublesome daughter allegedly violated the probation terms when sexual assault claims were leveled against her. An official from the rehabilitation program Chelsea was ordered to take also accused her of failing to take the treatment seriously. These accusations led to the offender’s stay at a Wisconsin jail.

Besides Chelsea, Rosie has welcomed four other children via adoption. She became a mother for the first time when she welcomed her oldest child, a son named Parker Jaren O’Donnell, who was born in May 1995. PEOPLE reported that he graduated from the Los Angeles Film School in January 2025.
