Donald Trump Veers Off Script To Boast About TikTok Popularity And Take Aim At Taylor Swift
President Donald Trump was supposed to be discussing a new investment initiative for American children. Instead, the conversation quickly shifted to TikTok. While announcing new financial backing for the so-called Trump Accounts on Monday, the president abruptly abandoned questions about the program’s funding and launched into an extended tangent about TikTok, his popularity on the platform, and why he believes social media helped propel him back to the White House. Along the way, Trump once again invoked one of the biggest names in entertainment: Taylor Swift.
Trump Turns Question About Investment Accounts Into TikTok Victory Lap

What began as a discussion about the financial support behind Trump Accounts quickly took an unexpected turn when the president started talking about TikTok rankings. “Now there’s a thing called TikTok, have you heard of it?” Trump asked, per a video shared by Fox News.
He then claimed newly released figures showed he had become the platform’s most popular figure. “It was announced about two days ago, the new numbers just came out. Do you know who the number one person on TikTok is by far?” he asked before revealing, “Trump. Me.”
Trump continued by drawing a comparison to Swift, one of the platform’s most-followed celebrities. “I’m number one. Like Taylor Swift was number 11. I’m number one, by far,” Trump repeated.
Video from the event showed several attendees appearing amused by the unexpected detour, with some individuals seen smirking and exchanging glances as the president continued speaking.
TikTok Numbers Tell A Different Story Than Trump’s Claim

Trump’s comments quickly attracted attention not only because he brought Taylor Swift into the conversation, but also because the actual TikTok numbers paint a more complicated picture.
For the record, Trump’s official TikTok account currently boasts 16.6 million followers and more than 121.8 million total likes across his videos. Those figures make him one of the platform’s most-followed political figures, but they fall well short of the numbers posted by many of TikTok’s biggest stars.
Swift, despite being relatively inactive on the platform in 2026 and posting just three videos this year, currently has 33.5 million followers and approximately 274.5 million likes, more than double Trump’s follower count and total likes.
The comparison becomes even more striking when looking at TikTok’s overall rankings. Neither Trump nor Swift currently sits inside the platform’s Top 10 most-followed accounts. According to Just Jared, that distinction belongs to creator Khaby Lame, who leads TikTok with roughly 162.3 million followers. He is followed by Charli D’Amelio with 159.1 million followers and YouTube superstar MrBeast with 129.1 million.
Trump’s Comments Highlight His Evolving Relationship With TikTok

Beyond the boastful comparison, Trump’s remarks also underscored a dramatic shift in his stance toward TikTok.
As reported by The Wall Street Journal, during his first administration, Trump repeatedly pushed to ban the Chinese-owned app over national security concerns. More recently, however, he has credited the platform with helping him connect with younger voters and expand his reach ahead of the 2024 election.
That evolution was evident during Monday’s remarks. “Maybe they’re bad, maybe they’re not,” Trump said. “I know one thing: Great American people, tremendous businesspeople and companies, bought it. American companies, great ones, own our TikTok, and it’s very influential, but I’m number one by a lot.”
He later added, “I think it helped me win the election in a landslide, if I tell you the truth.”
Taylor Swift Has Become A Frequent Target Of Trump’s Criticism

Trump’s decision to bring up Swift also comes against the backdrop of a highly publicized feud between the two figures.
The singer publicly endorsed former Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2024 election cycle, prompting criticism from Trump and many of his supporters. Since then, the president has repeatedly mentioned Swift during speeches, interviews, and social media posts.
At various points, Trump has mocked Swift’s political influence, questioned her popularity, and suggested her endorsement efforts were ineffective. The singer, meanwhile, has largely avoided responding directly to the president’s remarks and has continued to keep her political commentary relatively limited outside of major elections.
That history made Trump’s latest comparison especially notable, as Swift’s name had little connection to the original topic being discussed.
Social Media Reacts To Trump’s Taylor Swift Comparison

Several critics argued that the president’s comments reflected an ongoing fixation on Swift, whose name has repeatedly surfaced in Trump’s public remarks despite the singer rarely addressing him directly.
“It just shows he continues to be a pathological liar,” one user wrote in response to a video circulating on X. Another commenter questioned why a policy-focused event had suddenly shifted into a discussion of social media popularity.
“For any public official to use a formal press briefing to rank themselves against a pop musician is, to say the least, bizarre. Aside from the unexpected nature of the comparison, the metrics themselves are inaccurate,” the person wrote.
Others mocked the image of a sitting president measuring his success against one of the world’s biggest entertainers. “The most powerful man in the world reduced to ‘I have more TikTok followers than Taylor Swift,'” another critic commented as a separate user added, “Imagine being the president and still competing with a pop star on social media. That’s comedy at its finest.”
Meanwhile, some Swift fans viewed the remarks as further evidence that the singer remains a frequent topic of conversation for Trump. “My girl living rent-free in his mind. Oh, he hates her,” one commenter wrote.
